Psalm 139 describes what the theologians call the “Three Big O’s of God.” This song is an expression of the profound spiritual experience the psalmist had with God.
Humans are the most intelligent of all the living beings made by God. Yet we still fail to understand or acknowledge the greatness of God with our limited intelligence.
The psalmist exclaims the effect of the greatness of God upon him and simply states "such knowledge is too wonderful and lofty to attain."
- OMNISCIENT GOD (The All Knowing God) vs. 1-4: God who created us knows every detail of our lives. God sees me at all times, at all places, knows my actions, words and knows my innermost thoughts. God knows every detail of our life more than what we know about ourselves. He googles our heart to correct and bless us unlike the devil who brings accusations. God’s searching is fair while Satan’s searching is evil.
- OMNIPRESENT GOD (The All Present God) vs. 7-12: This God is always with us. The psalmist realizes that he can never escape from him. Not distance nor darkness can keep him away from His knowing presence. This understanding of His omnipresence always boosts the confidence of a believer’s prayer life and is a motivation for holy living. It is also a warning to the sinner.
- OMNIPOTENT GOD (The All Powerful God) vs. 13-18: It is beyond our ability to comprehend or describe the creative power of God. Consider the magnitude of the known universe or the anatomy of a human body. To know this God created me and he is thinking of me all the time makes me realize that I belong to God and my body, my all belongs to Him.
The best way to respond to this Great God is by being obedient to Him and intentionally inviting Him to search our hearts. The first prayer should be “save me.” The second prayer we need to pray daily is “search me and lead me.”
May the Good Lord correct us and lead us victoriously in the coming days.
